“Has Your Pooch Put on that Holiday Weight Too?”

Here are some healthy low fat snack advice from some of our readers.  Thank you Brie and Janeen.

Pumpkin Drops
1 1/2c whole wheat flour

1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg

3 tbs. applesauce
2 egg whites

1/2 c. pumpkin
1 tbs. molasses

1/2 c. water
oven-400'
combine all ingredients and mix to cookie like consistency. Drop by tsp. (or less) 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheet. Bake 12 to 15 min (less for smaller size) until firm. For harder cookies, turn oven off & let cool 1 to 2 hours in oven.

Carrot Biscuits

(Smaller cookies are best- try craft stores for 1 inch cutters, I have over 50 mini size cookie cutters :).)
4 c. whole wheat flour

½ c. Oat or wheat bran
1/4 non-fat dry milk

1/2 ground carrots
1c. Non-fat chicken broth

1/2 applesauce (I always use unsweetened)
2 egg white
oven - 375'
Combine dry ingredients in large bowl. Grind carrots in food processor, add liquid ingredients and mix in processor. Add to dry and stir into soft dough. Knead, adding up to 1/2c flour to make less sticky. Roll out to 1/2 to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with cutters, prick with fork to prevent puffing, Place on greased or foiled cookie sheet and bake 15 - 20 min. until light brown.

Pear & Oat Muffins
3/4c. Water 1 egg
1tbs. veg. oil

1 Pear, chopped, skin & core removed
1/2c. Chopped walnuts

1c. Whole wheat flour
1c. Quick oats

1tsp. baking soda
1tsp. baking powder
oven - 400'
mix all ingredients in bowl until blended. Spoon batter into muffin pans, 3/4 full. Bake 15 to 18 minutes, completely cooked when toothpick comes away clean from center.
Makes 12 regular muffins or 36 to 40 mini muffins
(you can get mini muffin pans any where now and mini liners in craft stores) cook for shorter time if using mini muffin pans.

All do well frozen for 1 to 3 months so you can space them out.

I use frozen green beans canned. I just rinse off the canned ones that are canned with salt. Anytime I give them human treats like that I put it in a jar if it has salt on the label.. a jar with water and a lid.. I shake it up, drain, shake it up again, drain, add more water and let it sit, shake it again and drain and use. It is pretty salt free.. Salt is hard on a dog's kidneys. Our JJ was going out by the mineral we had out for the cattle.. salt & mineral.. and she got to drinking the water that stood around it from snow and rain, and in the tub too.. she got very very ill and boy we almost lost her. SALT IS NOT GOOD, and mineral in that amount added to the problem. Boy it scared us and it took me a while to figure out what caused it. We stopped it and she pulled out of it fine. WHEW.. could have done permanent damage. Even vitamins and minerals in that quantity and that liquid form can cause. HYPERVITAMINOSIS! Deadly!! Janeen
